How-to-guide to finding your unicorn, perfect-fit-for-you therapist

1) Search keywords

Type “trauma”, “stress”, “anxiety” + “therapist” or “psychologist” + location & city in Google Search.

For example: “trauma therapist in San Jose, CA”

2) Use therapy directories

Find therapists in your area & read their profiles to see if their specialty matches with your therapy needs.

Psychology Today

TherapyDen

Inclusive Therapists

Open Path Collective

3) Phone a friend

Are your friends & family in therapy?

Do they like their therapist?

Ask your friends to get you a referral from their therapist. Therapists typically have go to referral sources - their favorite colleagues who they can vouch for & refer prospective clients to with confidence.

5) Open up your search to online Therapy options

No commute? Snuggling into sessions with a blanket and warm beverage?

Sounds like a dream.

Online therapy increases your chances of finding your perfect fit-for-you therapist because you’re not limiting yourself to just providers in your immediate location.

Game changer.

now you know WHERE to find a therapist, HOW do you pick the best one for you?

A successful therapist search means finding a therapist who is going to be a good fit for YOU. The better the fit between you & your therapist, the better your therapy outcomes are going to be.

This fit matters because this is YOUR treatment & investment.

Therapy isn’t cheap.

So the sooner you can get to work on your stuff, with someone who gets it & gets you, the more you’re going to get out of your therapy treatment.

A good fit therapist has a professional website that speaks. to. you.

Feeling connected & understood by the therapist’s website content & writing style IS THE VIBE.

You can’t know for absolute certainty if a therapist will be a good fit based off of their website alone, but honestly it’s a pretty solid predictor of what you might expect when you interact with them in person. You can tell a lot about a therapist through their website - so do a deep dive and see if this is someone you can imagine working with.

So what about a therapist without a website?

Honestly, it’s a red flag for me.

We already know it’s rough waters out there trying to find a therapist. A website is a helpful - and necessary - resource to make sure you know what you’re getting into before you jump into sessions with a new provider. Therapy is an intimate process. So the more you can get a feel for the therapist BEFORE your first session, the better you can assess if the fit is going to work for you.

A therapist’s website should provide basic answers about the therapist’s practice including cost per session, what they treat, experience, etc. But without a good website? You’re left taking shots in the dark about your treatment and therapist personality fit.

And that’s not okay. Especially when you’re already doing so much of the work to find mental health treatment.
